Invitation

The Friðrik Ólafsson Memorial Chess Tournament will take place from 24 – 29. November 2026 at the premises of the Reykjavík Chess Club (Taflfélag Reykjavíkur), Faxafen 12.

Most of Iceland’s strongest players are expected to participate, along with a number of foreign competitors. The tournament is open for players with 2000+ ratings. 

Attention: there is a limited number of players, around 60. 

The organisers reserve the right to admit an additional 10–20% of players.

REGISTRATION FORM

Time control: 90 minutes for 30 moves with a 30-second increment from move 1.

Byes rules

Players are allowed two half-point byes in rounds 1-6, provided they give adequate notice and sign the bye-request paper by the arbiters’ table.

Please note that to take a bye in the 1st round you need to confirm your participation with pre-payment.

Data Protection 

In compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR, 2016/679), the organizing committee of Fridrik Olafsson Memorial hereby declares the following: The organizing committee will manage personal data of the players and compile the competition results. These results will be made publicly available. The tournament will utilize the Swiss-Manager program, and the results will be published online via chess-results.com and rating calculation platforms. Furthermore, the results may be shared on other websites or through various media outlets. Photographs of players may be taken during the tournament. Additionally, players can expect to be on camera while playing on live DGT boards. By participating in the competition, players acknowledge and agree to these conditions.

Please note that the tournament is close in time and location to the Sel Hótel Mývatn/Mývatn Öl Open, making it an excellent opportunity for foreign players to combine both events in one trip to Iceland.
